Colours School of the Arts, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization
began as a Performing Ensemble in May of 1995. This traveling
dance group has performed at various venues in Southwest
Florida. Students enrolled in the school are able to receive
instruction in modern and interpretive dance, music, drama,
and art. The school has operated in Southwest Florida since
May of 1995. Since its beginnings Colours has conducted its
sessions from a number of different locations within Lee County.
Additionally, Colours instructors have traveled throughout
Southwest Florida to teach children in public and private
school programs, after school programs, churches, and other
community programs. Currently Colours conducts its
programs from New Beginnings Ministries in Lehigh Acres,
Florida for its weekly classes and rents or borrows space
from local venues for its productions.
Colours history continued with the summer arts program,
which commenced in June 1997. The summer program,
which is comprised of music dance drama and art, has grown
to become an anticipated event for youth in the community.
Through the progression of the performing arts ensemble,
increased requests for instructional classes led to the
development of the school in 1998. As a school, Colours
offers arts to youths who typically have no outlet for artistic
expression.
Colours unique program initially offered classes in Traditional
West African music and dance, Ballet and Interpretive dance.
The curriculum has grown to include additional dance classes
as well as vocal and instrumental instruction, drama, visual
arts, and a major production ‘The Maafa Suite’. The Maafa
Suite is a valuable expression of African American history
with a cast of approximately 100 people.
Colours received its non-profit 501(c)(3) status in July of 2002.
