POSITION STATEMENT
As Colours has evolved and grown to become a family, it has been a most exciting journey! Not only have we come to appreciate and learn to celebrate diversity of cultures, and recognize the Divine plan that God has for us, we are proud and confident about who we are. We are children of the Most High King, Jesus Christ. We recognize that we are a people moving forward to better ourselves, our families and our communities both culturally and spiritually. There is such phenomenal growth in the young people that God has entrusted to the Colours staff. Our level of achievement in excellence has exceeded expectations. Our volunteer staff and students are a group of dedicated and committed young people that will not settle for the mediocre. I am so pleased and proud that God chose me to be a part of this incredible work.
Our dance was never dance for dance sake or movement for movement sake. In the secular world of the arts I have had countless experiences of entering the concert hall only to leave feeling somewhat confused and empty. There seemed to be no purpose or intent to the dance, but rather a series of acrobatic, space and gravity defying tricks, sexually suggestive movements, and expressions that have no meaning or purpose. One thing I have learned is we were not given our gifts just to entertain, or cause a "wow!" effect, but rather to make a positive impact on the lives of others and our community. We were given our gifts for a meaningful purpose, to glorify God and not ourselves.
I thank the Lord for revealing to me, sometime ago that there has to be some significance, purpose or intent in our dance. I discovered that dancing unto the Lord pleases Him. It draws others closer to Him. My testimony of His goodness is in my dance. When my dance testimony goes forth, a real possibility exists that someone could aspire to do the loving thing for his fellowman, or a lost soul can find Christ! As I continue to walk with God through my expressions of worship, He will reveal His heart to me and I in turn can express His heart to His people through dance.
At Colours, our students learn that their gift or their desire to creatively express themselves comes from God. Their goal is to inspire others to know the God we serve. One of our student's favorite mottos is, "I can save a life with my dance!" The goal is never to exalt self above who their creator is. They are rooted in not only their cultural identity but who they are spiritually. When we present to the community, we recognize that first and foremost we are presenting to God. We never worry about impressing the audience, we always strive to reach and connect with the audience.
I was prompted to make this statement because of the many comments and requests that we continue to receive. As followers and supporters, you have stood the test of time with us. I know that my Lord did not take us this far to leave us. Colours has served the community for over fifteen years and our prayer is we will continue to do so with God guiding us every step of the way. As worshippers, our heart will always be towards God and to do what is pleasing in His sight. We are not willing to compromise our beliefs for fame or fortune. We will always be willing to share the gifts God has given us for His Glory. If we should decline a request that you have made, it is because it is a compromise of God's standards. Our prayer is that you will continue to love us as we continue to love you. Please know that I will never be able to express my gratitude for all you do to encourage our youth to strive to be the very best they can be.
In God's Love and Blessings,
Shalom,
Sharon Hill
